FLECHAS Opto-mechanical Components

FLECHAS is a breadboard Echelle spectrograph. Its name stands for Fiber Linked ECHelle Astronomical Spectrograph.

The article is aimed to distribute, with as much detail as possible, each FLECHAS subsytem and their components. With the help of the document Integration and alignment of FLECHAS we believe you are in the best condition to build your own breadboard spectrograph.

FLECHAS was first presented in the “Spektroskopietagung” organized by ASPA- “Aktive Spektroskopie in der Astronomie” that took placed in Bebra (Germany) last May 7-9 2010.

The workshop  of 4 hours described the complete process of integration and alignment of an Echelle spectrograph assembled on a commercial breadboard. We presented the optical design, efficiency and a preliminary data reduction as well. This data reduction included only wavelength calibration of the instrument.

Later, at the annual meeting of Aspekt 10-11 June 2017 in St. Niklausen (Switzerland), we used a modified version of FLECHAS using a prism as X-disperser to demostrate our presentation:

In both occasions we were inquired to make public the opto-mechanical components of FLECHAS. It took a while but here they are!

Introduction

Our first FLECHAS presented in ASPA 2010 used a transmission grating as X-disperser:

The pinhole we use is a stainless-steel 0.13um thick disk, optically the reflectivity is not very good:

The ideal pinhole would be a disc of glass drilled with a 150um, then aluminized as a mirror.  Lenox Laser has pinhole drilled on discs of glass (but no aluminized). Example:

A mini-lens will be used to adapt the F/3 from the output of the fibre to the F/18.5 of the collimator.

If an Image Slicer is used, you have the option of using aluminum mirrors (>85% reflectivity) or enhanced aluminum mirrors (95% reflectivity). Mirrors are typically delivered with …. to avoid sharp edges. Fibre Output Assembly

This module describes the components to align the image of the fibre-output in the center of the focal plane of the collimator. The mechanics permits two adjust the projection of the fibre in the collimator. Two axis of rotation are defined while keeping in position the image at the focal plane of the collimator.
